As the publisher of MJoTA websites, I do not take sides politically in countries other than the United States of America, my home for 35 years. As a Quaker who is opposed to homicide and all forms of violence, all I see in Congo is massive human rights violations, and death and mayhem that needs to be stopped.
In May 2013, I went to Pretoria Central Prison to speak with Etienne Kabila, whose brother President Joseph Kabila has tried to kill him several times, and was certainly behind his imprisonment on false charges in South Africa.
That Etienne Kabila is the biological son of the assassinated President Laurent Kabila is widely reported. Indisputable. His younger brother Joseph was adopted when their father married Joseph's mother. Etienne led a quiet life in Capetown for 10 years, where he was woefully underemployed as a security guard. He has been trained in economics.
President Joseph Kabila has a house in Johannesburg: I spoke with eye witnesses who told me he lives there. Two countries away from Congo. I have no way of verifying the length of time he spends in South Africa, but I know from media reports and DRC press releases that he is outside Congo more than 5 times a year. Maybe 10 times. And I know with certainty that he does not care how many lives of Congolese he has destroyed because he hates his brother.
I am looking at the videos posted below and am wondering why the US, in the UN, is supporting the government of Joseph Kabila. And yet, according to Friends of Congo, the US independently supports groups of militia that are fighting the government.
The misery of murders, rapes, child soldiers, child slavery: this misery is continuing because only the victims want it stopped. And victims always have had a poor record of stopping violence until they have very strong friends. Congo needs very strong friends, stronger than it has.
