I am calling upon my fellow community residents, New Yorkers and the people of this great nation to come together and heal while keeping the Trayvon Martin's family in our prayers.

 

The not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman is simply unjust, and the key thing that needs to be changed is the law.

 

I have heard directly from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington DC this week. They have ensured the community that their offices, in collaboration with the state and local elected officials, will investigate this matter further.



Meanwhile, I recognize the remarkable way that people have peacefully expressed their disagreement in the verdict, this shows a level of matured energy that needs to be channeled into our everyday civic engagement activities, and ultimately increase our social justice.

 

George Zimmerman a 250-lb man stalked and shot 140-lb Trayvon Martin who was not a criminal, not a drug dealer nor did he have a gun. He was just a child wearing a hoodie on his way back to his Dad's place after buying Skittles at a local store.

 

How far have we come in our quest for social justice for all human-kind? It is clear that we, as a nation, still have further to go.

 

I ask everyone to join hands in affecting change and encourage solutions that will combat violence in our communities.
