Mr Belafonte was born in 1927 in Harlem, New York, the son of a daughter of Jamaica and a son of Martinique. He lived with his grandmother in Jamaica went to school. After returning to the United States he served in the Navy in the 1940s.
Harry Belafonte was one of 3 Grand Marshals leading the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, New York City on Sep 3 2012, Labor Day which marks the end of summer.
