The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Moroccan-controlled Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal. The capital and largest city of Mauritania is Nouakchott on the Atlantic coast.
The population is around 3.5 million, of which 10 to 20% are detained, tortured and owned by citizens.
