Newark. SJ Dodgson. MJoTA 2014 v8n2 p0318
Shavar Jeffries is running for mayor of Newark, a job held by Senator Cory Booker before he was elected to the United States Senate.
Shavar Jeffries is a civil rights lawyer and a university teacher whose life was disrupted by the violent murder of his mother when he was 10. He comes from a extraordinary family of over-achievers who have been unwilling to succumb to despair after violent tragedies. His cousin is US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, and early on his mentor was the great late Congressman Donald Payne.
Below, in their own words. Donald Payne jr successfully contested his father's seat; in a video in which he speaks, he is introduced by Congressman Hakeem Jeffries.
Pictures below, I took in Newark City Hall in October 2012 during the Rwandan flag raising. Brother and son of the late Donald Payne, NJ Assemblyman Bill Payne and Congressman Donald Payne jr spoke to the gathering, which was organized by Marie Claudine Mukamabano, daughter of Rwanda and survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Assemblyman Bill Payne was an elected official in New Jersey from 1998 to 2008. Both the younger and the elder Mr Payne have formally endorsed Mr Jeffries' campaign for mayor of Newark.
