World Cup 2014

The final 4 for the 2014 World Cup. SJ Dodgson. MJoTA 2014 v8n2 p0705

Out of the 32 starting teams, 3 weeks later we are down to 4: Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Netherlands.

The first time I heard about the World Cup I was working for 5 weeks in a biochemistry laboratory in Amsterdam, making more and more beautiful mitochondria and validating some experiments.

Every morning lab workers came in looking tired and talked about the game, and finally, after the semi-finals, they were down to the 2 that would play for the cup: Argentina and Germany. The lab chief told me the teams were "the Nazis against the ex-Nazis".

In 1986, 41 years after the second world war had ended, not a lot of love was lost between Germany and Holland. And Argentina was seen as the country that welcomed the Nazi fugitives, when no other country would take them.

Two weeks later I was back in Germany, watching the final in a party held by Lothar Blossfeld Dipl Physik, who became my husband and father of my 2 younger children. Thinking back, I must have not said anything inappropriate, phew.

So now we have Germany and Argentina; and Holland a favorite. Gosh. How sweet that would be for the Dutch. However, look at Brazil and their need to win. In the knockout round, the star Brazilian player broke his back. Brazil is prepared to do anything and everything to win. This will be an exciting week, capping off 3 exciting weeks.
World Cup 2014. SJ Dodgson v8n1 p0322

The World Cup kicks off in Brazil in June 2014, and unless you are being sponsored or can afford the approximately USD1,000 per ticket, you are going to have to find a big screen television somewhere. Or you can probably watch the matches later; I have posted here videos of all the African teams that have qualified for the 2014 World Cup. At this stage, late March, I do not know if any of the African teams are favored.

Each of the country teams that has qualified to play World Cup soccer in Brazil has already been playing World Cup matches since Fall 2013. These matches eliminated every other country. The 32 country teams in the 8 groups starting the Brazil matches will be reduced to half in the first round. I predict in Group A that Brazil and Cameroon will advance to the 2nd round.

In the second round matches, the 16 country teams will be reduced to 8. These 8 will play the quarter finals. The 4 quarter final winners will play semi-final matches. And then the 2 winning country teams will play each other for the World Cup 2014.

The World Cup always finds me wondering about my allegiances. Through birth, upbringing and familial ties, I should be supporting USA, Germany, Australia, and England. However, my favorite teams this time are Honduras, the single team from the Caribbean, and Ghana.

To win? Brazil. Of course.
