Benazir Bhutto was president of Pakistan twice, and was forced to stay away for 8 years under threat of death. When she returned to run a 3rd time, was was assassinated.

Benazir was a daughter of privilege, educated at Harvard University and Oxford University. Her father was also president of Pakistan, and executed by judicial order in Pakistan.
India had a woman president from 2007 to 2012, Pratibha Patil. Her final speech as president below.
Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1979 to 1990.

Mrs Thatcher was a bright girl who graduated from Oxford University in Chemistry, trained as a lawyer and joined the Conservative Party. She had no known rich or powerful relatives.

Dilma Vana Roussef, president of Brazil. Her story in Wikipedia is of a woman born to fight, born to win. Her father was a European Jew, who was lucky enough to be communist, which meant he was able to escape Bulgaria for Brazil ahead of the police long before being Jewish was deadly. He rapidly married a Brazilian and became a successful businessman in Brazil.

His daughter has lurched all her life between the pinnacle of respectability to wanted by police: the low points have to be when she was tortured by police for 3 weeks, and when she was diagnosed with cancer. Watch her, below.
